Touching upon different harrowing eras of AAPI history in the US like Angel Island, Japanese internment camps, and the prevelence of Yellow Peril, I created a series of portraits for The California Endowment for their AAPI Hertiage Month campaign. I wanted to highlight pivotal figures who demonstrated resilience and lifted their peers despite experiencing obstacles from systemic racism.

Figures:

Judy Yung - Chinese American historian who helped translate Angel Island poems + fought to make the Angel Island Immigration Center a national landmark

Chiura Obata - Japanese watercolor artist who taught art classes at Topaz Internment Camp and became a professor at UC Berkeley

Anna May Wong - Chinese American actress who was among the first Asian actresses to grace the television screen
